D. Simon Jackson touches on part of my reasoning in a column for cbcnews.ca.

The more I think about it, the more tempted I am by the idea of drafting, rather than electing voluntary candidates. Don't even let them volunteer as candidates for parties, either.

Am I wrong? Am I right?

Wasn't it an early idea in the Enlightenment that rule by the people should mean that people were randomly picked to rule?

(I use the idea in my little fiction project as a way to rule a cut-off colony. No elections, just random choice)

In the first version of DC's Legion of Super-Heroes, it was similarly established practice for picking candidates for President of Earth. Whether the current version of the series will resume that part of the backstory, I don't yet know.

One of the biggest problems with our political system in that the qualities needed to be elected into office are completely the opposite from those needed to actually do the job.

That seems an ongoing problem with any halfway useful political system.
