Redrawing the Sol System Map
Aug. 16th, 2006 12:27 pmA lot of us have likely read the news about the International Astronomical Union's ongoing discussions over what constitutes a proper planet. BBC reports that they're considering setting up a new category using Pluto as the template for the class. Officially, the proposed class name would be "Pluton".
I'm certainly amused (mildly so) by all the inadvertant Trekspeech being tossed around at the IAU's press conferences...although once they get that settled, they'll then have to nail down an official name for 2003 UB313, one of the candidates for "Pluton" status.
Hoping that Persephone wins out here...because the alternative has already been established as resorting to pop TV culture. I think we ought to save that for the extrasolar planets, yes?
Assuming that any locals we find on those planets don't consider it grounds for war against us, of course...
