I'm pretty much decided on who I'm voting for, and who I'm voting against tomorrow.

I'm not going to say who or why here. I may explain some time after the fact, but not tonight. Not for a while, anyway.

I don't know how most of the rest of the country is going to decide the course of our future together as a nation, or whether they'll decide that such a country as we now have shouldn't have a future. It's happened before, elsewhere. It'll happen again. Somewhere.

Someone put a name to at least one of my fears recently, and I only learned of it tonight. You may have heard of Spider Robinson, novelist, dreamer and musician formerly of the American Union, and now a resident of British Columbia and one of many who've chosen to adopt Canada as their Home.

I don't know that I agree with all of the details of his essay, but since he named my fear, I feel it only right to link to the essay and let you judge for yourselves.

Take a look.

Take a look around you now.

Time stands still.

It awaits our choice.

Whatever we choose tomorrow, let it not be the death of kindness to each other.

Please.

Thanks for linking to that. The reasons he gave for becoming a Canadian are the same that I had for contemplating becoming one, a possibility that I haven't completely given up on yet.

Wow. I wouldn't have expected that from Spider Robinson, who's been a tiresome libertarian crank for years now. OTOH, he is a draft dodger, so it's nice to see him remember his roots.

I'm glad you included a link to the essay, Dwight.

While I believe Spider oversimplifies matters on each side of the border, and in general attributes all that's good to North of the border and all that's bad to the South (something that's at least in part revealed as wrong by the simple fact that there is this political & ideological war going on in this election - not to mention the glaring point of ignoring the many millions of us down here who voted against the current government), he nonetheless makes many excellent points.

Good luck to you all up there.

Mike, I know full well that he's oversimplifying as much for effect as out of honest fear. The fact that you and yours are still hanging in there's proof enough of that for me.

That said, my thanks for the good wishes. Whatever happens next, good or bad or anywhere in between, we're going to need them.

My best to Ari and the kids.
