Apparently, Dr. McLean's just been appointed to the presidency of the Canadian Space Agency!

Congratulations, Dr. McLean!

(No, we've never met in person or by any other means. I just thought it good news.)

(No, this doesn't let the New Conservatives off the hook with me, either. Just FYI.)

With luck, he'll last longer than the former president of my former employer did. But then everyone was surprised that Larry Boisvert took the position. I seem to recall that relations between CSA and the late, lamented Telesat Canada weren't always as harmonious as they might have been. (There's still a Telesat, but it's not the company it used to be, and despite the legal fiction that allowed it to be sold, it's an American branch plant operation rather than a real Canadian company now.)

Truly a shame, that. An independent national infrastructure is something to be cherished, nourished and defended. Not privatised into branch-plant status.

As for Dr. McLean's appointment...

...I'll hope for an appointment that outlasts the current government by a considerable margin. Seems to me that our space agency ought to be run by a Canadian who's been in the Deep Black at least once. This is a good follow-up to the Garneau precedent.
