What about just plain old mundane parking violations? The 'truckers' couldn't have been parked legally all this time. In some places the fines can get pretty heavy if not paid off promptly.

No, I'm pretty sure they weren't parked legally during these past three weeks. Ottawa Police officers declined to fine them on the spot for reasons that - I suspect - ranged from concern for safety of self and bystanders to ideological complicity. But license plate and MOT/DOT registry numbers have been recorded by multiple parties over the course of the siege.
