The title and summary of his opinion is in the URL. I'm not convinced that Mr. Maher is correct, and unsure of how much progress we're making towards building a more just society, but he has a case to make here.

That's the way it looks from a small-c conservative perspective (which pretty well defines Macleans).

I'm not sure. I think it's more that parts of Canada have moved right, leaving the centrists with little choice but to attach to more progressive alternatives. That move right also means that it makes little sense for the Liberals to pander to them, so their policies skew left to appeal to that side of the spectrum.
