So, NYC residents don't get to be able to visit Canada anymore?

(At least until DT-45 is finished in Washington, DC...and apparently I've misread the implications of the article. For now.)

This is Disturbing, too.

I didn't know they could do that. But of course. They can do anything now.

That's not what they're doing. You have to travel on a passport now and can't cut the lines. It's a hassle, but that's all it is.

There's been tension between states and feds for years about IDs, going back through multiple administrations. I see this more as harassment than an actual danger sign. It's penny ante shit but not anything more than that.

There are a lot of states where a driver's license isn't sufficient id to get on a plane or travel to Canada, including my own. Here we have two classes of IDs. I'm not sure about New York because I don't live there. It's been an ongoing squabble for fifteen or so years, though.

Effective October 1, my current California DL won't let me on a plane even if I fly *within* CA. Talk about restricting freedom of movement. When I heard about this move against NY, I figured CA would be next. This administration will certainly find some pretext for that, I'm sure.

Yep. A standard license here won't get you on a plane. But that goes back to the Real ID Act, which was passed in 2005. There were delays in that to give states time to upgrade their systems, but those waiting periods have timed out now. The timelines were actually worked out during the Obama administration (c.f. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_ID_Act).

Like, whether or not it's a good idea, it's nothing to do with Trump. Not least because the man's too stupid to read a calendar.

Oh sure, 45 doesn't get the blame for RealID. I'm just thinking that somebody in the administration is tasked with finding ways to be shitty to CA/NY/other blue states. Also, notice that 45 is no longer a NY resident?

Yeah, I expect us to see more of that kind of thing in the runup to the election.

Mind you, I think the Democratic AGs are going to hassle him back real hard.

Oh, I do hope that SDNY gets him, but I'm not betting anything on no new evil tricks by Barr. This admin has trained me to always look for something worse.

Yup.

Um, not really?

We can still visit, we just won't be an in any expedited lines. Mostly this affects businesspeople, which is a good reason it probably won't stand up.
