To me, a lunar gateway is infinitely sensible, especially if it's at a midpoint trans-lunar. The ISS is in too low an orbit and requires somewhat frequent boosts, whereas a higher gateway wouldn't need those boosts. But I think the most important bit is if you can figure out how to make an H2 fuel on the moon and how to build things there. Establish a base there, build rockets there, then use a Lunar Gateway station for assembly. Then launch deep-space missions from THERE, rather than having to expend such ridiculous amounts of boost having to get out of earth's gravity debt.

I think it's infinity sensible until they figure out how to make space evelators.
