I've got two FB accounts, one that I reluctantly created a couple of years ago when my then-bosses insisted that we should be Active On Social Media. I've barely been on that account in more than a year, so it hasn't been useful in that sense. (I know several professional colleagues who make very good use of FB; I just can't be arsed, I guess.)
I drop into my personal FB account once every couple of days to check on my son and a couple of friends, all of who appear to live on FB, but I don't post there either. FB just doesn't interest me, despite a lot of my friends being on it. It seems ... boring? My Best Beloved stopped hanging out on FB entirely, because it was a toxic place for him after he discovered that long ago friends had become far right-wing Super Believers. Even when he stopped checking in on those friends, the place started depressing him.
tl;dr: I agree. And I like the journal aspect of DW (and even, still, LJ). Long form thought and communication still attract me (which is odd, given that I also kind of like Twitter.)
I use Twitter to catch breaking news, after which I can follow the news on other outlets. It's very useful for that sort of thing. And there are a few authors I follow there as well, folks who've mastered the art of being witty, pithy, or emotionally resonant in 140 characters.
