Happy 25th B-Day Two Days Early, Charter!
Apr. 15th, 2007 04:48 pmIt's been drawn to my attention by various news services that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms has what's effectively its official birthday two days hence. For all its flaws, real and perceived, it is something I consider part of the basic roots of justice and law here in Canada.
Seeing as I want to honour that anniversary, but may not have the energy due to various other obligations on the actual date, this is it.
My thanks to her Britannic and Canadian Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II;
to Pierre Trudeau and his peers at the federal and provincial levels(even those who counted themselves his critics or his foes on this issue, whether they like the results or not);
to the people who've helped to make the principles it's supposed to stand for concrete things in our lives over the quarter-century since: attorneys, clients, judges and others.
Long may the Charter stand!
