"All of this has happened before. All of this will happen again."

Some variant of this was first spoken on the second version of Battlestar Galactica in the episode "Flesh and Bone", attributed to one of the iterations of Leoben Conoy (portrayed in their several forms by Callum Keith Rennie). Which makes for an interesting juxtaposition of the state of my work life coming 'round to unemployment and job-hunting once more, alongside our current finance minister's comments about the state of the job market for the generation after mine this past week.

If he actually said that millennials should get used to "job churn", I've got some news for him. I've been used to it for a quarter-century. Part of it was certainly my own doing, not wanting to leave Ottawa-Gatineau for a life on the road after getting my second diploma from Algonquin College for Animation for TV. The motive for not wanting to wander the world in pursuit of work was thanks to growing up in a civil service family. That situation meant to me as a kid that "you live where your (parent)'s boss says to live".

I just didn't want to do anything like that anymore. Here in Ottawa-Gatineau, I found friends, a like-minded community in local fandoms, and in those pre-National Capital FreeNet days (never mind the internet as a whole), I wasn't about to turn my back on that.

Of course, I've paid a price for that. Ambitions put on hold, always living with relatives (whom I don't thank properly at the best of times), jobs perhaps not as financially rewarding as you might have expected me to land when I do get them. And there's other consequences as well.

I don't think I'm the only one of my generation to live this way either. Pretty sure of that.

I'll still keep putting in the effort of looking for better work, and I hope I can make a better go of it as writer and/or artist in the next few months as part of that larger process.
