Here ice is measured in mm (not even mm(s). So, why blast it? To open a channel for shipping?

My son would like to apply for that job. Explosives? Heck, yes.

Mostly to prevent flooding hazards. The ice has been known to jam up and flood the real estate on either side of the river in decades past. Some people have their houses directly overlooking the river with not much more than a footpath in the way.
