Media watcher that I am, some questions recur to my mind.

For instance, a while back I posed a question on [livejournal.com profile] ottawa about the usefulness of a third daily newspaper serving the Ottawa region.

I'm posing it again here: could Ottawa do with a daily newspaper of its own that hewed to the Atkinson Principles as set out by the founder of the Toronto Star, and further developed by his successors in the century or so since its founding?

I'd be happy if Ottawa had a paper that wasn't an embarrassment for a national capital. I'd be happy if Ottawa had a paper that recognized that Ottawa doesn't end where Rideau turns into Montreal Road. I'd be happy if we had a paper that hewed to the Atkinson Principles instead of their exact opposite.

Unfortunately, the people seem reasonably happy with a wretched broadsheet and a wretched tabloid.

I'll note that you and I don't seem to be alone in our concern and discontent with the current status quo, per my initial inquiry on the [livejournal.com profile] ottawa community.
