Random Bits of Thought on City Life
Nov. 3rd, 2011 09:16 pmI'll be posting a longer spiel a little later on - it's been overdue for a while now - but some links of interest that have popped up tonight:
seanan_mcguire mentioned something in her latest "Bits and pieces to update the world" that intrigue me: the idea of a Science Crawl. Maybe this is something for discussion over at
ottawa_sf or
can_con_news - perhaps both communities? - to see if we've got enough going on in any one part of Ottawa-Gatineau to try to organize such an event around in the months to come, either as its own thing or under the banner of the Ottawa SF Society, CAN-CONsf 2012 or the Jane's Walk organization. Suggestions, counter-proposals, advice, etc. are all welcome on this point.
coudal pointed out a review by Roger Ebert of a movie that those of you who've been following
spacing_ottawa might be interested in, titled Urbanized. Does anyone reading this in Ottawa know if/when either the Bytowne or Mayfair Theatres - or perhaps someone else? - will be showing this film? I'd like to have a look!
budgie_uk reminded me of Laurie Penny, a blogger currently working with the New Statesman in the UK. While rummaging through her more recent entries, I came across this one in particular. Not sure if
alasdair already pointed out that specific essay, although it seems the timing for me to (re-)discover it is particularly useful, given the last month or so of headlines across the planet generated by the Occupy Movement and those responding to it for good or ill. I don't know how bad the homelessness situation is in Canada right now, but I do know there is one that needs addressing on an ongoing basis.
More later on. Meantime, over to the rest of you.
