Requiescat in Pacem, Jack Layton

When I heard the news this morning interrupting The Current whilst sitting at my day-job desk, I wept. No screaming, but I wept. Layton was one of our best, and we lost him too soon.

He left the rest of us a challenge to rise to, though, as others here and elsewhere have already noted. If you haven't already read it, go and take a look. I'll still be here when you get back.

Someone I know (named commodorified) came up with this comment about politicians in general (and referred to a reaction to which Layton was one of the few people who were not affected):

That politicians are by default low and dishonest scum is one of those things that Everybody Knows that isn't actually so, and by believing it and spreading it [un]critically, all we do is provide cover for the few-but-damaging number who **are**.
