Been toying with a number of things in between job searching, research, keeping up with friends and family and housechores.

One of those is a bit of spacecraft design based on material from Christopher L. Bennett. Seemed like a cool idea at the time, based on a discussion of favourite starships in novels over at TrekBBS.com. Still does. I should really be doing something like this in CorelDraw, Illustrator or SketchUp, I suppose, but a real pen on real paper ends up most mentally efficient for me right now. None of it's officially sanctioned in any real sense, but it's a fun exercise that I can learn from.

Also, I've been toying with Manga Studio.

Lab Rattery 1

Not quite where I want to be with it yet, but then perfectionism holds sway in just about everything to do with illustration for me. Especially after visiting Montréal the previous weekend and seeing several Big Names working away in Artists' Alley again.

Practice, practice, practice...

Nice ship. I wish "Enterprise" would have had the NX-01 look more like your ship and a bit less like the familiar saucer-and-nacelle thing, although I understand why they had to stick with the familiar brand and I've got a lot more respect for the 'Akiraprise' after reading Doug Drexler's post about the details that went into it but never made it on air.

I like the drawing functions in Manga Studio better than in Photoshop, but I haven't played with it enough to really get a handle on it. Pencil and paper is still a lot easier.

To be fair, before I learned just how closely the Powers wanted the Akira design hewed to by NX-01, I wasn't too concerned about what got to air. Akira had to have an ancestral design or two in its own lineage, just as the Enterprise-D had its three or four.

And yeah, all that stuff Doug wanted to put into it? I'd have loved to see it on-air as well.

I sympathize re: digital draw/paint-ware vs. actual paperwork. I'm learning, and it's getting easier to learn as time goes on. Still...
