US Politics: The Night to Come
Nov. 6th, 2024 08:50 amTo those of you who want a better USA, I'm sorry.
To those of you who want what's now coming, damn you all.
I don't know what to do next, except keep doing the day job I'm getting paid for right now, as well as all of the other stuff I need to do to keep my life going.
I'm not safe here in Canada. No one in Canada is safe. I recognize this.
More later, I'm sure...

Yeah, right.
Think it through . . . iDiJT is going to die in office. He's fat, old and totally out of shape. Just like Reagan was in his 2nd term.

Date: 2024-11-07 05:39 pm (UTC)You are probably safer in Canada, at least, than in the U.S.
I'm still in the U.S., in beautiful California. I'm almost at the end of a green card renewal saga that took more than two years beyond the expiry of the old one. With any luck at all, I'll have the now authorized replacement in my hands before January. Then I'll probably start the naturalization process, because I can't imagine being able to cope with the green card renewal process 20 years from now (at 87 years old) or maybe even 10 years from now, even if it doesn't get any worse - which it will.
Fortunately I'm post-fertile. And while not rich, I'm on the prosperous side of the too steep economic divide. (Some might call me "rich", not having seen the local cost of living.) Both factors, plus living in a blue state, make me safer than most in this country. And because I'm "white" by the stupid local castification system, I don't automatically have a target painted on my back.
That's a mood
Date: 2024-11-10 06:04 am (UTC)I'm annoyed by the number of Canadians who don't seem to realize what happens after the Conservatives win that so many seem to think they deserve.
I'm sorry, I reserve the right to be terrified at a political party where 60% of their membership votes to essentially declare "Hey, queers, we hate you, and we're coming for you as fast as we can figure a way to get around the courts/rewrite the laws." Given that 20% of zoomers and alpha's are queer, this is disturbing just as an expression of generational conflict never mind the humane and moral dimensions of their aspirations.
(If you hadn't heard, the official conservative party platform is that they want puberty blockers banned. They claim "oh, that's just to protect the children" but we saw how this playbook has gone in Russia and then in states like Florida, it was just the first step to making queers illegal. There are conceivably good faith reasons to want to restrict puberty blockers. This crowd aren't articulating much less believing them.)
(I'm queer and I prefer that term to the acronym soup the media dithers about the precise configuration of this week.)
I understand it's optics to not show their teeth before they bite. But it irks me immensely that there's a lot of people who are just genuinely extremely ignorant and don't realize what they're giving their support to.
And I'm well aware it's bigger than just me and mine being on the shitlist of the authorities for the rest of my life. I'm just particularly pissed about this because no one ever seems to think about Niemöller's quote "First they came for the Jews...." That persecutions trying to purge 'the enemy within' never reach a peaceful conclusion.
The Chinese communists are pretty brutal and they had to drop this policy(!) because the Cultural Revolution was such a disaster it gave pause to such hardened thugs as the top leadership of that generation were.
It's so frustrating that while the study of human irrationality and fail modes is at the highest state of its art ever...not that we've arrived at a robust model or a set of best practices. But we're at least aware of whole categories of general problem solving and thinking that just don't end well. And almost none of this information, provisional and incomplete as it is, has reached the Overton Window.
Good luck with your own preparations to survive what's coming. Or to find meaning in the face of the prospect of things going very badly.
