Software Dilemma

I'm not going to name the item in question at the moment, because the issue's bound to come again with something else later. I figure that this is going to be an "evergreen" sort of question.
Anyway.
There's a piece of software I'm considering buying an update for tonight, because severe discount on offer, limited time offer.
Complication: I don't have the hardware needed to run it right now. I don't know when/if I'll be able to get that hardware. I *do* like using the software's older version with the hardware I *do* have at the moment.
Thoughts?

(exception: unless it is an item that I constantly use, and I have no more than a year's worth stockpiled [i.e. toilet paper], I don't buy it until I need it.)
