It’s very useful for out-of-Canada friends—apparently it’s the thing that most people use. It’s owned by FB and is not at all secure. I do not get why people prefer it to the million other messaging apps but I have it on because some people will only use it.

Well, why would you?

If you want a secure messaging app, use Signal. It's private (not owned by Facebook/Meta) and uses end-to-end encryption for text, audio & video.

Upvote. Signal is good stuff, they take encryption very seriously and are threatening to stop operations in the UK because they want a back door.

Seconding this - I use Signal by preference, or Whatsapp if the people I'm talking to already chat with it.

The one instance where I actively used WhatsApp, I needed it to get some IT security stuff done quickly under Pandemic protocols before I started a particular job.
