Southern California: Thomas Guide from Thomas Bros. IIRC, they were county-based. Between San Diego up to Ventura, there are at least 5 counties.
I had at least 2 of them.
They had their own reference system and I'd occasionally see people asking for details on the projected coordinate reference system they used or some other way to convert the data to lat/lon or something that's known. "Illegal!" I always replied.
In Britain I liked the Philips ones, the detail around intersections and suchlike was useful, but for where I lived most recently it fell well out of print and made me wonder if local paper road atlases were disappearing due to satnavs.
I was an early adopter (1995) of consumer GPS and always travel with a few units, but I still also like paper maps and atlases.
I've always liked the Rand McNally road atlas for the US. Large format, easy to read, useful on the road as well as for planning a trip.
Delorme also makes good detailed state atlases. I've used a couple of those over the years when I needed more detail of the back roads.
My mapping software of choice is Delorme Street Atlas, sadly discontinued. Before a road trip I'll load my custom waypoints (many of the obscure spots I visit don't have conventional addresses so I use lat/lon) and print out my own version of a "triptik" as AAA would call it.
