I've been listening to Cross-Country Checkup on the radio this afternoon, and I have to admit to no small degree of shock at hearing one of the callers today admitting to being actually disgusted that the current Opposition in the House of Commons is opposed to torturing prisoners when our troops catch them alive in Afghanistan. Disgusted at the insistence that we adhere to basic human decency and international law.

How do we end up with fellow citizens like this?

I blame the yanks.

The Reforma-tories have basically decided that offering basic human rights to detainees is "offering comfort to those who are trying to kill our troops".

Certainly, the current Administration in Washington seems to be doing its level worst to justify a number of seats of dishonour at the Hague somewhere down the line. I wouldn't blame the entire population, though, especially the way things have been going the last year or two. I have reasonable hopes for their next election, barring a disaster out of one of David Brin's blogged-about nightmares.

As for your other point, I'm not arguing with that. That's certainly the attempted spin by the government side of the House.

It's people like these that probably caused Naomi Wolf to write her latest book: The End of America (http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/End-America-Letter-Warning-Young-Naomi-Wolf/9781933392790-item.html).
