Comment on "Living in Interesting Times" by [personal profile] autopope

Referring to this commentary, perfectly timed for this Orange Monday in particular:

http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2025/04/living-in-interesting-times.html

Charlie, I fully expect to remain unsafe from US law - despite living on Canadian soil as a Canadian citizen by birth and by choice and despite having no plans to visit the States - for the foreseeable future. You know about the annexation threats the Vulgarian's made in recent months. This is another of the reasons why (a) Hegseth was hired as US SecDef and (b) why Hegseth in turn fired those senior JAG officers.

If Carney remains PMoCanada after April 28th, we might stand a better chance of riding at least some of this bad craziness out. Ditto if either Singh or May gets the job. If Poilievre and his Conservatives win, we all get handed over without a fight from "Ottawa" AKA the federal government. I do not expect a lot of fellow Canadians to permit themselves to be handed over quietly in any case.

Just saying this much will draw unwanted attention to me, I'm sure.

Political Confession

I am a mediocrity.

There. I said it.

Canadian Election # 45

So.

The writ's been dropped.

Let's go.

I'm gonna vote because my life depends on it.

And because your lives do too.

After the Spring 2025 State of the Sociopath Speech

I watched Justin Trudeau's speech via YouTube and skipped the Vulgarian's speech. Seems to have been wise regarding my mental health.

And there's concerns about the Rich, Sociopathic and Militant...

And this was the front page of the Globe and Mail today:

Globe and Mail front page- 5 March 2025

Simple, right?

Summation

Now, we have three of the heads of government of the Permanent Five of the UN Security Council actively working to drive the rest of us humans to some form of autocracy if not feudalism.

Ontario Election 2025

I voted yesterday at Place d'Orléans Mall. The Elections Ontario riding field office is on the second floor until it's all over.

NDP, of course, in my case. I couldn't let myself vote under the influence of the idea that the outcome's predestined at either the riding level or across the province. I had to vote with hope in place.

I'm happy to note that there was a steady stream of traffic. Lots of people showing up early, and at a steady pace, too.

Trump Tariff Theory

He said today that the tariffs would start on the 1st of February.

The day after the foreign election interference report is released by the federal government here in Canada, right?

Trudeau's Decision

I am not happy. He was pressured, cornered, whatever verb that invokes the concept of coercion.

No, he has not been perfect. There are choices he made that I am unhappy with to this day.

There's still good and kind works in need of doing, though, and now those works are going to be more difficult to get done. The good works already done over these past five years, of course, are now at greater risk of being undone.

The current leadership of my own party helped make this mess inescapable. I'm not happy with that either...

Timothy Snyder: Decapitation Strike

So Prof. Snyder wrote a thing a few days ago...

https://snyder.substack.com/p/decapitation-strike-december

So I'm looking at Justin Trudeau's trip to visit the Vulgarian this past weekend in that light. Yes, I've read of the reports that the Vulgarian "suggested" that Trudeau become a governor of one of several newly-annexed states. I don't think that Trudeau's interested. Neither am I.

If it were AOC or Jamie Raskin making the "suggestion", I'd consider it more seriously and less nervously. Depending on the terms, it might actually be tempting.

Inspired by Cross-Country Checkup on CBC Radio Today

Speaking as a Canadian?

Canadian independence is at stake. If we end up geopolitically sandwiched between Trump and Putin again, we are at risk of ending up like Poland did from 1939 to 1945. As a battlefield, as an involuntary host of death camps, as a client state. Invited to submit to anschluss at best, blitzkrieg at worst. The Trumpists may say that they're focused on Mexico and points south right now, and we cannot rely upon that fixation to remain. Even if it does hold, we will need to take sides in any case.

To any Americans who can vote this upcoming November? Please vote for Kamala Harris, as she is the best of the available options right now. Do push for better candidates in the years that follow, yes. Absolutely! And vote for Harris as soon as you can, while you can, to make sure that you will be able to keep voting.

The end of the Trudeau-Singh Deal

Dammit.

Does my preferred political party have to keep shooting themselves in the foot and expecting that foot to not go to pieces?

Health: Dental Improvements

So...the federal dental care programme continues to be brought into effect.

It's decades late. It's still needed. And I'm glad it's finally on its way.

The out-of-pocket costs have been dogging me ever since I aged out of my parents' work-derived medical coverage, I've never been able to hold a job long enough to get similar benefits of my own, and by this time next year, that financial-medical pain is going to finally end.

Good.

Canada/Politics: Manitoba - A First In A Century...

...and it feels like we should have had Gord Downie still with us to put lyrics to the occasion.

Yes, we still have Buffy Saint-Marie, Leslie Feist, K-Os, Bruce Cockburn, and so many others of like talent to do so...for the moment at least.

Congratulations to Wab Kinew and the Manitoba NDP.

Canada/Politics: First Black Speaker of the House of Commons

First person of any non-White colour, actually...and he's an MP I met once in passing at a pro-CBC protest/advocacy walk from Gatineau across the Alexandra Bridge into Ottawa and up to Parliament Hill a few years ago: Greg Fergus. Details of today's vote here:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/mps-vote-new-speaker-1.6984673

I'd have thought that this would have happened years earlier, with some other Member of Parliament gaining that honour and title. That's not how history evolved, though, so here we are.
