A friendly acquaintance recently got new eyeglasses, and thereby put me in mind of a long-standing beef with the eyeglass designers of the world. At least the ones whose products get to the opticians I can visit in person: I don't like vertically-narrowed lens-frames.

What's available is getting slimmer along the vertical by the year, and I can't help but feel like my eyes are under more physical threat from the elements as a result.

I used to work at Pearle Vision in the late '80s-early '90s, which were the huge-plastic-frame days and the round-metal-frame days. To today's aesthetic, they look really dated and goofy, but yeah, they certainly gave you more coverage. Especially if you're a bifocal or progressive lens wearer; plenty of room for the reading area at the bottom of the lens. Nowadays, it's tough to find a frame deep enough for a progressive.

Because of the shape of my face, I prefer the shallower lens height. But as I lose weight, my face thins out and rounder frames don't look so weird on me. Which is good, because I'm going to need bifocals sooner than later.

With the way the age demographics are expected to trend for the next few decades, we won't be alone in that "need bifocals" category.

As for the rest of it, I think we're in lockstep agreement.
