David Olive has an opinion that might be worth considering regarding what consequences of GM pulling out of Oshawa might be worth pursuing. It's being published in today's hardcopy edition of the Toronto Star, if you want a look.

And yes, nationalization could be a temporary measure, with an eye towards getting Magna and the major Canadian pension funds - among others - more involved. The main thing is to turn this from disaster to opportunity to remedy a long-standing problem.

I read two or three articles on this yesterday. Aside from multiple plants closing down here and Ford also closing plants, people are slamming Herr Groppenfuhrer for failing in his promise to keep and expand jobs in automotive manufacturing.

The worst part (aside from the job loss) is the foolishness of people to focus on larger cars with poor mileage that are more dangerous in accidents (fatalities are up) against smaller cars that are safer which are being eliminated from Ford and GM's lineup.

Profit margins.  Sales on smaller sedans that are more economical are down, sales on SUVs and trucks that get poorer mileage and are more profitable are up.  And a lot of those are being made in Mexico.  Myself, we're going to stick with our Subarus.
