A Near Miss and a Death

Once I got back to the house from this morning's visitation, the job search resumed. No applications filed today. Not sure what impulse brought me back to Facebook tonight. Maybe it was seeing the news from Elayne Riggs on Blogspot about her employer's office building being the site of the shootings in Midtown Manhattan yesterday. (Glad you're okay, Elayne!)

And now that I'm here, I've learned that Pat Augustine has finally passed away.

We knew each other from Mike Norton's Comic Book Crossroads fanzine as contributors. A few years back, as part of his downsizing efforts in the wake of his cancer diagnosis, he sold me his Wacom Cintiq, which I'm still using as of tonight. It's been incredibly useful in my art hobbies. (We were both annoyed at the import duties I had to cough up in addition to what I paid him as I recall.)

A good guy, and I miss him.

(And I note that his Discord account is still logged in as I type this. Not a complaint.)

RIP: Erin O'Neil

Erin O'Neil died today.

If you were part of the Ottawa, ODSP, Disabled-Rights, CDB-support communities on Twitter, you might have known her as "veganlovebunny".

To me, she was a relatively recent acquaintance there, and her last years were a struggle that finally exhausted her. Environmental sensitivites, autism, lymphatic issues, disability "supports" that weren't doing the work of helping her, abusive fellow tenants, a landlord that wasn't paying attention except to punish her complaints.

She ended herself rather than be evicted from the housing she was barely holding onto in Manor Park.

She deserved better, a longer and kinder life. Friends who weren't so distracted by our own struggles, too.

I never got to meet her in person, and now I never will.

Canadian Workers' Mourning Day

By way of explanation to non-Canadians:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Day_of_Mourning_(Canadian_observance)

We don't have a holiday as such for this. We do have ceremonies of observance.

He was the second major Spider-Man artist. Following upon Steve Ditko himself can't have been easy.

RIP: Gordon Pinsent

So it's finally happened.

I was kind of hoping he'd live just long enough to be in an Alpha Flight movie. I don't know which character would have been a good fit, mind you...

And for the record, I did get to meet him once, at the Magnetic North festival. I thanked him for Bob Fraser (Due South) and Duff McArdle (Power Play).

Sad News: RIP Teletoon

My animation professor at Algonquin, Gerry Paquette confirmed by sending this link to me this afternoon:

https://www.awn.com/news/canadian-channel-teletoon-shut-down

Classmates of mine worked on shows for that channel in its early years. We're going to miss it in the forms we've been used to watching it in, I think.

For those of you learning of this from me first...I'm sorry. I just stumbled onto the news via my Reading List.

Never got to know her well, and she was part of several of the ongoing conversations of this venue, and - if memory serves - LiveJournal before that. I'm grateful nonetheless that she lived and that we got to know her at all.

Doctor Who: I am going to miss...

...everything after this latest movie, apparently. BBC and Disney+ just announced their Big Deal for access to the series outside of the UK from now on. CTV Sci-Fi is history to them now, just as the CBC was forced by Conservative Party pressure to walk away from their relationship for Canadian broadcast rights years earlier.

I smell ideological pressure on the BBC from somewhere, of course.
