Memory and Words

Yesterday, I needed to be reminded that "eavestrough" is a word and what it's used for.

Well, if it matters, I didn't know it was a word at all?

So I learned something today! Yay!

(I suspect my family just calls them gutters even when they're not, technically.)

Actually, they are gutters. That's the generic term for the job they are used for. "Trough" is another generic. Water trough/gutter installed on an eave. I've installed a bunch of them. What they're called varies on which area of the country you're in. One of the fun things of dialect. (A hobby of mine.)

I'm discombobulated to have reached an age when a familiar unquestioned word suddenly resolves itself into its component parts and I think 'that can't be right.' Like hydrofoil-- wait, that's a boat? Not aluminum wrap?

I believe that if you have a herd of eaves, that's where you put out water for them.

I have never heard that term! I love it!
