Ten things we missed out on future-wise...

...and I thank [livejournal.com profile] davidbrin for pointing it out to me:

I'm glad to have avoided items # 1, 5 and 8 - so far - but as for the rest? I'd like to see some of those predictions come true before I die!

#5 and #8 are still decided posssibilities, with Iran and DPRK on the cusp of becoming nuclear countries, and the way computers are being used to spy on us every minute of every day.

#1 though? Flying cars? Tha FAA will never permit it, especially with the C4 packed car vs skyscraper scenario mentioned. That's a massive pipe dream.

On the other hand, Brin's one of those arguing that each and every one of us can nowadays return the surveillance favours in kind. For whatever that's worth.

While this is true, it is also true that the government has the powers to actually do nasty shit with their surveillance of us. The opposition? (Small 'o' here, not the HM Loyal version here...) Not so much.

We could and should be doing so much more on #10. But it's talk, talk, talk and then no will and no action. I guess there's just too much money to be made doing things the way we are doing them now. :/

Great article, though. Thanks!

There are certainly people seeing fortunes to be made in breaking the dominance of the current ways of doing things...and seeking to make those fortunes.
