In answer to "Naming Rites"

Andrew Barton spoke a little while back about planet-naming in pop fiction (and possibly elsewhere as well).

My thought?

One of the things the Trek writers - TV, novels in particular - seem to have been sneaking in has been the assumption that the species we see DO have their own names for themselves and their worlds. But that pesky Universal Translator as we know it today was first programmed by humans...

Requiescat in Pace: Mike Wallace

We lost one of the co-founders of 60 Minutes last night.

Now, according to some religious traditions, he knows the whole truth. Here's hoping that he's found peace and comfort in that knowledge.

Update - Easter Monday 2012:  [livejournal.com profile] michaelgeist has also noticed the situation. I am reasonably certain that some good can be leveraged from this, although I'm unclear at the moment as to how. Suggestions welcome!
