A couple of things.

1) One wonders if perhaps our current government is getting Wrong Ideas from Hungary's behaviour of late on more than one front.

(My concern re: the treatment of Hungarian Roma continues unabated, FYI.)

2) Christopher Flavelle comments and speculates over at Bloomberg.com on why Canada seems to be getting a "pass" re: our government's behaviour of late.

The irony is that the people these surveillance programs are supposedly to target, (as in they usually claim to target crime or terrorism) already have the skills and publicly available software to bypass them.

As to the second part, I guess it's really a matter of comparison? It's like when the UN complains about our treatment of women. Well they lose a lot of credibility when you see the commission making the complaint is chaired by Iran and Saudi Arabia. It's not that Canada is pure by any stretch of the imagination, we're just purer then the people studying our behavior.
