An open note to Shelagh Rogers

I just heard of your appointment to the Order of Canada.

We've met once before, very briefly, at the Lockout Protest Concert at Glebe Collegiate back in 2005. You would've still been hosting Sounds Like Canada at that time but for that lockout. And while the show resumed afterwards, and you did move on from there to hosting The Next Chapter...via those two shows(and This Morning prior to Sounds Like Canada, which I also listened to) you've introduced me to books, to music and musicians and ways of seeing Canada and the larger world that surprised and entertained me.

Judging by the news of your appointment, it turns out that I was far from alone in this view.

Good.

Congratulations, and thanks again for everything so far...and probably for a few good deeds yet to be done, too!

I went to that concert! It was exactly one month before my surgery. I had a chance to speak with Shelagh at length too.

Music wasn't half-bad at that show, was it?

It wasn't bad at all, as I remember.

First time I'd ever heard Ember Swift, as I recall. Bought a couple of albums on the strength of that performance of "Witness". Not everything on those albums was to my liking, but some of the tunes spoke to the part of my music-brain that likes Bruce Cockburn's stuff.
