The movie of Kiss Me Deadly, with Ralph Meeker as Mike Hammer, takes a lot of liberties with the source material, but it is an absolute classic of the genre. I've only read seven or eight of Spillane's novels. They're fun but have no depth to them whatsoever, unfortunately; there are plenty of hardboiled crime novelists who have brought a lot more to the genre. But maybe I'll go find a Hammer or two I haven't read yet and show some respect.
