Not having seen either of the movies cited, I'm not sure I could comment comparatively either way at the moment re: Mr. Rhys Meyers.

As for an authorized continuation author, I'd be happy with Mr. Barer given his performance with the Kilmer movie adaptation alone. I have a suspicion that the original script for that film had more tributes to the original source material than the film's producers were comfortable tolerating.
