Checking In - 14 Dec. 2025

Got laundry done. Carried out some of my democratic duties as a registered member of a political party. Got shopping done. Did my weekly CPAP equipment-cleaning. Also, continuing with the star map projects and checked in with some of you, here and elsewhere.

A productive Sunday.

comments

Star Trek Mapping: Harmonizing the Maps

Working on multiple maps of the same region of #StarTrek 's version of our galaxy is fun. It's also research-intensive and time-consuming, especially where keeping the various maps consistent with each other is concerned.

From last night's progress to such ends in support of several Tranquility Press fanfic projects...

comments

Having a little fun with the map projects before bed. Equuelus, Hercules, Sagitta, Corona Borealis, Aquila, that general neighbourhood. Places like Kitalpha, Ancha, Bunda, Libertas?
Edge of Midnight: Base Map Progress XIII

Nailed down four more systems' host stars last night. I'm not entirely happy with the choices, mainly because the catalogue numbers available to use are not short enough and distinct enough. Numbers starting with GAIA DR3, APASS9, SKYM2, 2MASS and so on...and the SIMBAD database is very much a work in progress, perpetually playing catch-up with the new data - or old data finally data-entered after months to years' waiting - as it comes in.

comments

Maps: Edge of Midnight Base Map Progress

Okay, so I've been having fun reading this serialised Star Trek-linked fan-fiction dressed up as a history book called Edge of Midnight by John Concagh AKA "Seamus Devenish". So much so that I've started working on a "base map" to show his version of the affected regions of the Federation-Klingon border.

If you're interested in keeping an eye on my progress and you're not already on the relevant Discord or Facebook pages, I've got a thread running over at the Affinity forums, since Affinity Designer is what I'm using for this project.

comments

WIP: Air Route Map - Canada - 14 Sept 2022

This is still a work in progress. I am not happy with legibiity of the place names, not yet. I've switched most of the labelling over to Helvetica for now, pending a decision on what to switch the labels to.

If you know of any communities and connections that I should add to this map, please tell me!

comments

I am inclined to think it wasn't a disaster.

Whether or not it was a success, we'll have to see over the next 2-3 weeks.

comments

I was discussing the lists of recommendations, one from from the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls' Inquiry and the other from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission elsewhere on Facebook this morning. From the MMIWG recommendations, this is one I can selfishly agree with:

4.5 Establish a guaranteed annual livable income for all Canadians, including Indigenous peoples, to meet all their social and economic needs.

That aside, I'm making a note to review the whole list. If there's some web site tracking Canadian and Canadian-adjacent nations' progress towards achieving them...? CBC News has a page set aside for tracking progress on the TRC Calls to Action.

comments

Electric Vehicles: A Pleasant Surprise? Maybe?

Looking at this for a few minutes:

https://www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/archive/2021/09/electric-cars-have-hit-inflection-point/620233/?utm_source=feed

I didn't think things were moving this quickly on the global scale in terms of cars and trucks. Yes, the manufacturing process is still messy as Hell. But are we making progress of some sort here? I think the answer to that question is "yes".

armiphlage, autopope, you might have some informed context to add here...? Anyone else?

comments

Stephen Maher on Canada Election 44

The title and summary of his opinion is in the URL. I'm not convinced that Mr. Maher is correct, and unsure of how much progress we're making towards building a more just society, but he has a case to make here.

https://www.macleans.ca/opinion/canada-has-shifted-to-the-left/

comments

Things that got done today:

Kept up the job search.

Tried to push onward with CPAP acquisition paperwork.

Mowed the front lawn.

Got some sketchbook time in.

Got walking exercise.

Updated my Affinity design software.

Returned an overdue book to the library without drama.

Stayed in touch with family.

Stayed in touch with friends.

Adding tonight:

Watching an interview of a respected author of political satire (Terry Fallis).

comments

An Ecological and Medical Good News Item

No one is selling leaded gasoline/petrol for cars anywhere on Earth now. At least, not legally that we know of. Algeria was the last "recognized" country whose gas stations were still selling the stuff, and that finally stopped this year.

We'll still be recovering from the error of having used the stuff for generations, but with each country and company that got out of that business, the resulting damages have been less severe over time.

Switching the world's transportation fleets over to zero-emissions vehicles is a continuing project, of course.

comments

Accomplishments of the Day

A partial list:

Waiting on the new e-mail re: my CPAP paperwork.

Turned away from an offer of a one-month contract to pursue another, longer contract.

More slow progress on the culling project, finally.

Got some sketchbook time in today while watching illustration tutorial videos.

I think I've gotten some progress on multiple fronts today. I want to do better tomorrow.

comments

According to covidvax.live, we might get to 5 % of Canadians fully vaccinated as of tonight.
