A List for the End of February 2021

1. The job search continues. As I type this, I'm looking at Indeed and Jobilico. I expect to check several federal commissions, departments and agencies, a couple of crown corporations, GC Jobs, the federal Job Bank, and at least ten temp placement companies (yet again) over the rest of today.

2. I hope to listen to Ontario Today at noon, because Perseverance on Mars is the topic of the day.

3. Downloading new updates for Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher.

4. The Affinity suite is still on sale from Serif.com at half-price as I type this. About C$35 for each of the three programs in the suite.

5. Inkscape and Krita and the like are also still useful freeware, so why not get those too?

6. Listening to The Current right now. The discussion in progress as I type this entry?

Letter-writing. Actual letters through the paper-mail system. Apparently, this is making a come-back among many who have the time and enough other resources.

A day and a half late with this entry. But it's here now. It doesn't feel all that different so far, of course.

Stuff I've been doing:

Watching "Revolution of the Daleks" on Doctor Who.
Reading The Art of Star Trek: Discovery.
Buying fonts in Comicraft's annual New Year's Font Sale. This year: revised edition of Wiccan, along with Doohickey Lower and Ultimatum.
Checking in with Canadian Conrunners Central on Discord.
Grocery errands for the household.
Sketchbook practice on actual paper.
Assorted house chores.

Boxing Day 2020

Well, this was a quiet day too. The House reruns keep playing on CTV Drama upstairs, and for all the trouble I went to over the years to accumulate the DVD collection I currently have, I can't be bothered to watch a one of them yet.

No, for me it's Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap on Radio One right now.

I may be about to sell another book from my personal library. More on that tomorrow, maybe.

Rereading dduane's Star Trek: TNG novel "Intellivore" and geeking out a bit - again - over the star name-dropping. Looking up "B Hydri" via SIMBAD is bringing up nothing. Should I go to AAVSO?

Blood work this morning at one of the local labs. Routine stuff, postponed because Pandemic.

Five jobs applied for this afternoon, and three video tutorial courses completed as well.

And I now have 300 "Clippy Points" thanks to a Celsys promotion. Not sure what to do with them yet.

More tomorrow to report, I expect.

- applied to one more job, and looked at over a dozen job-search boards for additional leads

Saturday Stuff

1. After watching the third episode of Stumptown, I finally watched the first episode of Diggstown tonight. Had the first season saved on the family PVR for months, and could not find the guts to watch it until tonight.

Yes, I know how that choice of phrasing looks.

Diggstown is worth the time, and I should have made that time sooner. My dumb.

2. I am sad at the death of Alexei Leonov. Yes, he was 85, and he'd lived a full life. He was one of the space explorers I first learned to know the names along with the likes of Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins. The first space mission I have clear memories of watching coverage of on TV was Apollo-Soyuz. We're talking multi-page spreads in the Regina Leader-Post back when they were locally owned - so I want to believe - and not a pawn of Postmedia to serve the international right-wing-big-money movement.

3. I got my hair cut today at the barber shop I've been dealing with since my dad introduced me to their dad. One of the brothers is in hospital and the other is not well yet still working. I fear for them. I couldn't do more than pay for the haircut and wish them well.

4. Enjoyed watching the first two Short Treks, "Q & A" and "The Trouble With Edward".

5. I am still trying to work out some thoughts on the changes to OC Transpo's network that took effect this week.

6. I am not indifferent. I am trying to pay attention.

Meanwhile, the writing workshop last night was fun and well-attended. We had a six-word story-writing challenge, poetry was also committed, and some long-form fiction too.

Still wrapping my brain around the news breaking last night about the Sony-Disney Spider-Man movie revenue-sharing spat.

Job search continues as well.

Uncertainty

Right now, it's late on Sunday night. I watched "Kerblam!" on Doctor Who, which was okay-filler material. Liked the bit with the fez. I've had my first inhaler dose in a few months, and I feel like I botched the post-dosage mouth-rinse. I also have the sense that there's something I meant to do today, but forgot to deal with rather than chose to not deal with.

That sense of unfinished stuff you can't identify by name is annoying, isn't it?

I might find out today or tomorrow if my current contract is renewed/extended. Or maybe next week. But that current contract ends at close of business tomorrow if my employer and their client can't get the paperwork squared away fast enough. The previous renewal/extension was enough of a surprise in its timing. As in the morning of the day after.

Ah well...

Yes, I'm still worrying about how long my country has left as a free (enough) nation.

I watched neither 60 Minutes nor the Juno Awards last night. Sorry about that.

Given the changes in local weather and climate expected this week, I think I need to track down a new spring jacket.

No problems needing attention from the dentist until at least September, I'm pleased to note.

So...that's my oversharing for this morning.

1. Cooking pork ribs. They weren't exactly as dry as I wanted them to be, but this was my first attempt at this.

2. Freehand curve-sketching practice with new Pigma FB, MB, and BB brush pens.

3. There was a third achievement in there somewhere. I'm sure of it.

Connecting Nerdish Dots in Star Trek

Noting that Netflix isn't doing business inside mainland China, but they are offering their services in Traditional and Simplified Chinese langages anyway in assorted other markets.

Also noting that Star Trek: Discovery is being carried outside of the US and Canada by Netflix.

One of the supporting cast ships in the new series is USS Shenzhou NCC-1227.

Wondering if the dedication plaque will credit the Dalian Yards in mainland China for that starship. Dalian is where mainland China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaonang, was refitted to their navy's requirements.

Another Weekend Survived

It feels like boasting, and yet it doesn't. For some reason, that paradox does make sense now that I'm on the other side of that weekend. Got a lot of chores done, but didn't set aside any time for illustration for fun or profit.

A "blah" mood should not have any kind of smile attached to its emoticon.
